With an album title borrowed from turn of the century Social-Psychological theory, Snapcase's first LP, 's Lookinglasself, quickly established this group as the thinking man's Hardcore band. Think of this record as Snapcase's mission statement: a road map for a band that would spend the bulk of their career using Hardcore as a vehicle to espouse the virtues of self-reliance and perserverance.
Though many rightly point out that Lookinglasself stands out in Snapcase's catalog as lacking in the production value that their later releases would enjoy, that is not in and of itself a bad thing. In fact, it may be a necessary part of this band and their genre's legacy. There's a certain simplistic cadence to this record, a quality shared with this record's successor, "Steps".
Credit the cohesive nature of songs like "Drain Me" and "Filter" which, while they share a single track on the disc, are separate and distinct songs. Despite the fact that the recording of this album was divided into two sessions with the Almighty Don Fury responsible for six tracks and Fred Bestchen recording the rest several months later , the album doesn't feel any less complete than the rest of their catalog.
Of course, the other quality tying these tracks together is Daryl Taberski's impassioned, if not yet fully developed vocals which are devoted without exception to the struggle for self-awareness and self-reliance. Like a life coach for the Hardcore kids, Taberski attempts to appeal to the better, more responsible part of the listener. Never content with what is failing or broken simply because it's always been done that way, Snapcase was arguing that any one of us could replace what is broken with something better.
You may have went to a Snapcase show expecting to throw down with your friends, but you left thinking you could be doing more with your life. Music with a message indeed. According to Don Fury's review, this album was recorded on the budget of an EP over the course of a weekend.
The end product is one of NYHC's first independent LPs Quicksand's Slip, released the same year and also produced by Fury, had Polydor behind it and a more than adequate entry to this scene and this band.
While Salemi and Dressler's guitars are admittedly muted and lacking that razor's edge quality subsequent Snapcase records would have, Whiteside's bass is pronounced and much more a driving force on Lookinglaself than on any of the band's other full lengths. What fans of Snapcase's later recordings will recognize, however, is Tim Redmond's drumming. Possessing an almost mechanical quality to the sound, the snare and crash are so prominent in the mix that they often command more attention that the guitars.
It's not so much a complaint as it is an observation; Redmond's percussion work is largely responsible for the surgical precision sound that is a hallmark of Snapcase. In the end, this is more than a record for the completists and die-hard fans. It is a very accurate portrait of what the underground Post-Hardcore scene was like in the early 90's. It wasn't until the Steps EP that the band's unparalleled live sound was translated into a studio recording.
Lookinglasself remains, however, a great jumping off point for those exploring underground Hardcore and a record that defies dismissal. Nothing in particular about this album is epic, nothing about any of the musicianship is epic, and the vocals, while impassioned, certainly takes less skill than cooking an egg.
When this band arrived on the scene in the early 90's, that was Epic. This band embodies a very particular time period of hardcore music in general. When Lookinglasself was released there was very little hardcore that was like this.
There were a few bands kicking around, and some may lay this claim to Earth Crisis, but there was also Converge, Overcast, and the all mighty Unbroken, all playing with metal in a hardcore format. But something about Snapcase always stood out to me. When i first heard them it was with Shelter, and if you know Shelter, you know theyre not a tough or angry sounding band. Ray got all the out of his system for a little while at the time. So i was completely blown away when this band came on stage, all band members were around the same age, all of them were smiling, and they tore into the chunkiest hardcore I'd ever heard.
Oh, it was metal, but yet still completely hardcore. It was an epic show, hence my review title Now, "epic" in this case stands as a testament to space in time. Had I not been into hardcore already and had gotten into it later I might not understand why people held this record up for exaltation.
It isnt amazingly recorded, and it isnt musically proficient though Scott always had those awesome harmonic parts on the guitar but hardcore isnt about either of those two ideals. It is about passion, and Lookinglasself is swimming in unbridled passion, for life, for understanding, for affirmation and you be hard pressed to find that kind of passion in a lot of hardcore nowadays. To me, this is 5 stars. It helped change the world of hardcore, with its choppy mid paced breakdowns However uncool you think moshing is, Lookinglasself will make you want to stage dive off of your bed and do some serious floorpunching.
Steps is also a great EP with one of their best songs, Windows, but Filter, Looking Glass Self, Incarnation and No Bridge are such hardcore classics, you should at least be checking this record out if you interested in knowing the growth of hardcore throughout the 90's. One person found this helpful. Easily a top five album of all time. Snapcase has an unrivaled, sophisticated musical approach to the hardcore genre that is backed by refreshingly "hopeful" lyrics.
Daryl Taberski vocals writes clean, dharma-like verses that are equally as aggressive as they are profoundly inspirational. The drummers, Michael Kimaid tracks: 3, 4, 6 to 8 and Tim Redmond tracks: 1, 2, 5 , round out an already spotless album by providing a backbone of double-bass, tribal toms, chinas-galore, and snappy-snare beats. Most of the album is a Don Fury production which lends to a well conceived and master crafted addition to the Victory Records catalog.
This is an album that I hope my own children discover and inspires them to make a positive change in "a world worth living". The group flows in and out of rhythm into sharp instant bursts. The album is overall very consistent and doesn't deviate much from begining to end and I like that kind of tempo in an album. Just lacks a bit of bass but the drumming is outstanding with catchy solo bursts on guitar and drums.
I would not consider this group hardcore since I've listened to hardcore and it is in the likes of the company Renegade Hardware. Hardcore to me is hard crush techno.
